Family Back ground: Begum Nusrat Bhutto was born to the Isphanis of Karachi. Iranian Kurds by origin, the family trace their ancestry to Salahuddin Ayubi, the legendary Islamic hero, statesman and a great soldier. Nusrat Bhutto was born to a wealthy and culturally rich Iranian businessman whose ancestors had settled in Karachi and had a vast network of roaring business across the subcontinent at the time of the Partition of 1947.
Politics: She was nominated as the PPP chairperson for life by Z.A Bhutto when he was imprisoned, but later on, her daughter Benazir replaced her from the post. She kept the party flag high in defiance of a ruthless martial law and state oppression to the extent that she received a head injury in a baton charge by Gen. Zia’s thugs.This head wound, having not allowed for proper and timely treatment, had an ever lasting injurious effect on her to the extent that it gradually disabled her.
