Gumby, the green whimsical clay icon is recognized throughout the world. As the saying goes if you have a heart, Gumby is a part of you.
But who created this iconic figure? Art Clokey was the man behind Gumby who was died on Friday at the age of 88.R.I.P Art Clokey not GUMBY!
Gumby is perhaps forever. Gumby was created by Art Clokey with the help of her wife Ruth in 1950. Art Clokey had just finished his film school at that time. Gumby made its debut at “The Howdy Doody Show” but “The Adventures of Gumby” made him the star. The show was the first to use a clay animation for the purpose.
Gumby reappeared in sixties in the shape of a children’s toy but Gumby’s journey of fame does not end here. In 1980 all time entertainer Eddie Murphy parodied the character with a cigar in mouth on Saturday Night Live and Gumby was again a topic of the movie, “Gumby the movie”
One of Art Clokey’s friends David Scheve has commented that in reality most of the people were unaware of the name behind Gumby but to have your work admired by millions around the world is an amazing feeling.
Joseph, Clokey’s son said that the ability of Gumby to enthrall generations of adults and children speaks about the spirituality of his late father. Gumby was green because his father cares about environment, said Art Clokey’s son.
Art Clokey’s family has requested contribution to Natural Resources Defense Council in the name of Gumby instead of buying flowers for late Art Clokey.
