Gautam Gambhir Injury In IPL 2011

Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir hopes to recover for next game – IPL news
Kolkata Knight Riders captain Gautam Gambhir said that he will be fit for their next Indian Premier League game against Kochi Tuskers Kerala on Thursday, May 5, 2011.
The KKR skipper concluded that his injury was of minor nature and a day’s rest would be enough for him to heal from it.

The left-hander, who plays for Indian cricket team, was seen to be in pain in his knee during the game against Deccan Chargers that they were playing away from home at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium inHyderabad on Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
Gambhir was delighted with the show his team put on and gave them full credit for that. He acknowledged the efforts of his bowlers who confined the home team to a low total after a good start.
The Indian cricketer also welcomed Mark Boucher to his side and was optimistic that he performs with the bat in the upcoming matches.
Gambhir said, “It was a professional effort from everyone, and it was a good performance from our bowlers to restrict them. It is good to have Boucher and we hope he chips in with the bat as well. I had a bit of pain in the knee and hopefully I should recover for the next game.”
The Knight Riders continued their good run in the ongoing season of the IPL by emerging victorious over Deccan Chargers. With the win, they are now placed on top of the points table. Chargers, on the other hand have slipped down to number six.
Batting first, the Knight Riders piled up a huge total thanks to some great power hitting by Yusuf Pathan. The hard-hitting right-handed batsman scored 47 runs from 26 deliveries which included 3 towering sixes and 3 fours. It was due to his efforts that the Kolkata-based team reached a huge total of 169 runs.
Pathan, who bowls off-spin, was quite impressive with the ball as well though he remained wicketless. From the three overs that he bowled, the all-rounder only conceded 19 runs which helped in pushing up the required run rate for the Chargers.
Pathan was declared the man of the match for his all-round efforts. The all-rounder thanked god for his blessing and also appreciated his skipper who encouraged him to play his natural game which paid dividends for the team.
Deccan Chargers skipper Kumar Sangakkara was devastated by dismal fielding as his side dropped a couple of catches at crucial stages which enabled KKR to reach a good total.
Sangakkara said, “We should have limited them to around 150-155. Our openers tried hard and delivered a solid start. We need to hold our catches, bowl well in the death overs and build on solid starts. Kolkata outplayed us and it's back to the drawing board for us.”
The war over Gautam Gambhir's injury continues to rage on, with sides trading words over the issue and timing of his injury. The Kolkata Knight Riders kept their peace until they lost their cool. That would be the way to describe their reaction...

Shoaib Akhtar Retirement from international cricket

Pakistan team welcomes Shoaib Akhtar’s retirement from international cricket
Cricketing ranks in Pakistan have welcomed Shoaib Akhtar’s decision to retire from international cricket after the ICC World Cup 2011.
Akhtar told his teammates earlier on Thursday that he will quit international cricket after the mega event because of fitness concerns.
The Rawalpindi Express is having a mixed tournament so far as he bowled splendidly well in Pakistan’s triumph against Sri Lanka and in the first spell against New Zealand.
However, he conceded 28 runs in his last over against the Kiwis where he bowled some waist height full-tosses which were not difficult for Ross Taylor to hit out of the park.
He was unlucky not to have Taylor caught behind twice as Kamran Akmal was not able to grab on the opportunities but Shoaib was dropped for the game against Zimbabwe because of that one poor over at the depth of the innings.
Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi praised Akhtar as a teammate and said that he has always worked hard for the team.
Afridi said, “We feel sad for Akhtar as he has been a very nice team-mate and we'll always remember him as someone who always tried hard for the team and every player thanks him.”
Pakistan coach Waqar Younis said that Akhtar has set a good example for the senior players as his retirement means that the youngsters will get the chance and the Pakistan team can look forward.
“I played with him and then coached him. He has been a great bowler for the country and served the team well. It is a nice way to leave the place for youngsters and that's something we must appreciate,” Younis said.
The fastest bowler of the modern era has had a career full of controversies and fitness problems but he has been a genuine match winner for Pakistan over the years.
Pakistan selectors have been heavily criticised since the last couple of years for selecting the fast bowler because he has been carrying a lot of injuries. He had to cut down his bowling run up in Pakistan’s tour of England because of the knee problem. Even with all the injuries and controversies, there is no doubt that Shoaib has been a great servant of Pakistan cricket.

Shahid Afridi's Retirement From International Cricket

Shahid Afridi Announces His Retirement From International Cricket
Karachi; The rollercoaster career of Shahid Afridi took a steep dive last night when the all-rounder announced his retirement from international cricket in protest against the ‘treatment meted out’ to him by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
Despite leading the side to close series-losses against England and South Africa before beating New Zealand, leading Pakistan to the semi-final of the 2011 World Cup and winning the One-Day International (ODI) series 3-2 in the West Indies, Afridi was sacked as the ODI captain reportedly as punishment for speaking out against the team management.
Afridi confirmed the decision to a private TV channel late last night from England where he arrived from the US in order to fulfil his county commitments.
“I won’t play for Pakistan under the current PCB setup,” said Afridi who pulled out of the Ireland series due to his father’s illness. “Self-respect is something I hold in high esteem and this board has done nothing but downgraded me. I’ve had enough of this and took this decision after careful consideration.”
Afridi, who retired from Test cricket one match into his comeback last summer, did keep the door open for a comeback at a point in the future, citing the immense support he had from the nation and his love for the sport. The all-rounder, while hinting at the omnipresent division in the dressing-room, blamed the “Lahore and Punjab group” for his removal from captaincy, adding that “it made things easier for them”. He was also unhappy with the PCB’s method of appointing captain on a series-by series basis, adding to the instability and insecurity that prevented a strong side from being built.
“I was never given the required confidence by the PCB. I didn’t know whether I’d be captain for the next series or not. I wasn’t asked for input on selection matters. I was punished for speaking the truth [after his return from the West Indies]. I’m the captain, if the media asked the questions and I don’t answer them, who else will?”

While the PCB refused to comment on the retirement, officials of the board and Ijaz Butt’s snub to the captain last week have confirmed that the PCB is in no mood to approach the all-rounder and woe him back into the squad.

“Actions speak louder than words,” a PCB official told The Express Tribune.

“His attitude has been reckless not only on the field but off it as well and I think we need to put our foot down and say that no player is bigger than the board.”

The 2011 Indian Premier League season, abbreviated as IPL 4 or the IPL 2011, is the fourth season of the Indian Premier League, conceived by Lalit Modi in 2007. The tournament is being hosted in India and the opening and closing ceremonies will be held in M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, the home venue of the reigning champions Chennai Super Kings. The season runs from 8 April to 28 May 2011.This season the number of teams in the league went from eight to ten with the additions of the Pune Warriors India and the Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

2011 Indian Premier League Format

With the introduction of 2 new teams, a new ten-team format was created. This new format consists of 74 matches and was introduced as retaining the previous format would result in 94 matches, significantly greater than the 60 matches from the previous season, where teams compete in a double round-robin tournament. The knockout stage was changed to a playoff format. If a match ends in a tie, a Super Over will be played to determine the winner.
The ten teams are divided into two groups of five. In the group stage, each team plays 14 games: facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times. A random draw was used to determine the groups and who plays whom across the groups once and twice.
Each team plays the team in the same row and the same column twice, and all others once. For instance, Pune Warriors will play Chennai Super Kings and the other Group A teams twice but the other teams from Group B (Kolkata Knight Riders, Kochi Tuskers Kerala, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals) only once. Similarly Kochi Tuskers Kerala will play Delhi Daredevils and the other Group B teams twice but all other teams from Group A only once.

Team winning a match will be awarded 2 points. The losing team will not receive any points. In case of a draw or no result, both teams will be awarded 1 point.
A four-game playoff stage following the Page playoff system is held after the group stage. Four games will be played in the playoffs:
  • Qualifier 1: between the teams ranked first and second in the group stage.
  • Eliminator: between the teams ranked third and fourth in the group stage.
  • Qualifier 2: between the loser of the Qualifier 1 and winner of the Eliminator.
  • Final: between the winners of the Qualifiers 1 and 2.
The top three teams from the tournament qualify for the 2011 Champions League Twenty20. Due to the playoff format, the qualifying teams will be the top two teams of the group stage and the winner of the Eliminator in the playoff stage.

2011 Indian Premier League Squads

Each team can have a squad of at most 30 players with a maximum of US$9 million to spend on purchasing players. Due to the addition of two new teams, all eight existing teams are disbanded. Each of teams may retain up to four players from the 2010 season, with at most three Indians. Choosing to retain players would subject to a reduction in their salary cap, reducing the amount they may spend on other players. All other players are added to the auction.
The catchment areas of the eight existing teams were changed to account for the two new teams. Catchment areas are nominated areas to help each side select their local players. Each team must select four players from their area.
A total of 12 players have been retained by all the franchises while the remaining go to the auction list. The retained players — who must have been part of the franchise's registered squads for the 2010 season — were valued at $1.8 million for the first player, $1.3 million for the second, $900,000 for the third and $500,000 for the fourth. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings have retained the maximum of four players while the Kings XI Punjab, Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders released all their players.

2011 Indian Premier League Player auction

The player auction was held on 8 and 9 January 2011 at the ITC Royal Gardenia in Bangalore. Richard Madley was the auctioneer. A total of 350 players (reduced from 416 players) were in the auction. Each player in the auction pool had a reserve price set between $20,000 to $400,000.
